LED Lighting

As a business owner, you are focused on the costs of running your business. Energy costs are often overlooked. Maybe you feel like you have no control, don’t want to sacrifice comfort or it is just not on your radar.

LED is a great way to get a quick payback on capital, improve employee moral and reduce operating costs.  Here’s how businesses are saving money and reducing environmental impact using commercial LED lighting.

Why LED lights?

  • LED lights are a better choice for business. The lifespan of a LED bulb is up to 80,000 hours, while halogen only lasts 2000-6000 hours. LED bulbs also gradually lose lumen output at a rate which is almost undetectable to the human eye. Metal halide or halogen bulbs dissipates light much faster.
  • LED lighting is much more efficient. Traditional lighting turns only 10% of the energy required to productive light this increases demand charges. LED lighting use up to 80% of available energy to generate light. Lower energy required to power the bulb.  For example, a 84 watt fluorescent light can be replaced by a 36 watt LED light.
  • LEDs are also a safer option. They don’t contain any toxic substances, unlike fluorescent light, and they are less likely to catch fire than halogen bulbs and are completely recyclable.

How LED tech can benefit businesses

  • LED’s make business sense.  Improved task lighting. LED lighting distributes light better, and allows better ability  focus light in a single direction. This reduces the fixture count needed to give off the same levels of light as fluorescent or other types of lights.
  • Fewer lights reduce the energy consumption of the premises which in turn will reduce the electricity bill in your building. Impacting both energy used and demand rate charges by utilities.
  • Waste disposal issues are a thing of the past.  Due to the chemicals in fluorescent lights, waste disposal can be a hassle. LED contains no chemicals or toxic metals.
  • LED lighting dramatically reduces labor and maintenance costs. A typical lifespan of 80,000 hours is common. This means that you hardly ever have to replace them saving “soft costs” in the process. . So, whilst commercial LEDs may seem more expensive upfront, lifecycle costs are much lower.
  • Instant on and host of control options. When you switch on a halogen or fluorescent light bulb, you may find that the light takes a couple of seconds to come on. With LED, the light comes on pretty much instantly – the couple of seconds makes all the difference especially in time sensitive environments.
  • LED lights work well in low temperatures, which make them ideal for environments which are  very cold, such as refrigerated warehouses. Ensuring safety and visibility in tough environments is a hallmark of LED performance. .
  • Low heat conductors. As only a small fraction of the energy that a LED bulb generates is converted to heat, they are much safer than standard bulbs, which are often very hot to touch. There is less risk of burning yourself should you accidentally come into contact with an LED. This is also a benefit when it comes to temperature sensitive environments.

Which industries should use LED in their fixtures?

Offices
LED bulbs are ideal for offices requiring task lighting. This means that the bulbs make ideal desk lamps. The quality of light also improves the ambiance of your office, something which will impress your clients and make your employees more alert.

Hospitality
Restaurants and hotels will benefit from switching to LED lights as a result of the reduction in energy bills. Hospitality businesses often need to pay a lot of overhead costs such as rent and will already have high electricity bills due to the number of appliances.

Warehouses
LED bulbs make an ideal security light as they focus the light in one area, allowing for clearer pictures on CCTV. Parking lot and exterior building lights are popular applications. Plus the controllability of LED with sensors and more advanced options allow for the ultimate in energy cost reduction and employee safety and comfort.
